About the play:
Causing a near-riot on its opening night in 1896, UBU THE KING is
the tale of a grotesque and foolish man who shouldn’t be king.  Ubu is
as ridiculous as he is brutal, a scatological scene stealer whose
unchecked ambition is bloodthirsty and misguided.  He is a monster,
incited to his actions by his equally grotesque and greedy wife, Ma
Ubu.  The story of the Ubus brief rise and rapid fall is full of laughs
and lessons.  The show’s exuberant energy is fueled with references
to MACBETH, politics, history, and unexpected imagery.

Historically, UBU THE KING is regarded as the vulgar precursor to the avant -garde theatre genre.
