Cassie Atkinson joined the Mounds Park Academy community in December 2019.
What do you love about MPA?
MPA allows me to be who I am and doesn’t judge me for it. MPA isn’t in the business of choosing what they like best about me or molding me to “society’s expectations.” They encourage me to do what I like best and help me with whatever I may need to be successful.
How are you encouraged to dream big and do right at MPA?
Just having a judgement-free zone helps me dream big and do right. MPA wants to help me, not shape me into what they think I am meant to be. When I shared that I loved art and being creative, I was introduced and shown many opportunities on campus including classes, plays, studios, events, and galleries.
Why do you believe your teachers teach the way they do?
Mounds Park Academy teachers want the best for me. They don’t give up on me and always are looking out for me. Their challenges only help me to grow, rather than trying to knock me down.
If you have attended another school, how has your experience here been different?
Everything at MPA has been different than at my previous school. I can do what I love without being judged, I am supported by my peers and teachers, and every day I feel welcome in the community. I can feel happy and hopeful about my future too.
What would you tell another student your age considering MPA?
MPA changed my life for the better. I am seen by my strengths and not judged for my weaknesses. I can be who I am and have my own opinions, while developing and learning alongside a community who wants me to be there. I know prospective families may hear this from every school, but MPA goes above and beyond all of my expectations.
In what ways has MPA prepared you for life beyond school?
There are so many skills taught at MPA. Whether it be working with others, learning leadership skills, or even the scary thing called public speaking, MPA helps me and wants me to succeed.
What’s your big dream?
That’s a hard one. There are so many careers, opportunities, and aspects in the future that I look forward to. If I had to say one big dream, it would be using creativity, ingenuity, and science to help combat world problems, such as global warming.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your MPA experience?
MPA has changed my life for the better, and I hope it changes yours as well.
