from Bill Hudson, head of school
May is one of my most favorite months of the year (not just because of my birthday!). There is so much hope and promise as the grass greens, trees bud, flowers bloom, and boats go in the water. Hope and promise are important to us all and spring is a reminder of what can and will be.
Hope and promise are important to institutions as well. Over forty years ago, a group of parents and educators banded together in hopes of founding a new and different school, one built upon an understanding of the whole child. They believed in the promise of each child and knew that education is more than academics and includes the social, emotional, and physical development of a child and a balance between academics, arts, and athletics.
Mounds Park Academy would not exist without the vision of the founding families and the generosity of time and resources of so many through the years who have built our beautiful campus and school community. The hope and promise that led to the founding of MPA were fulfilled through financial gifts to sustain the day-to-day operations of the school and through gifts to capital campaigns to augment and enhance the MPA facilities and to provide scholarships to deserving students. Over the years, some families and alumni have made gifts to the school’s endowment, doing their part to ensure that the school benefits in perpetuity.
A planned or estate gift is one of the most long-lasting ways to support the school that we all love. These types of gifts might include making MPA the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan or, most simply, by making a gift through your will that doesn’t cost you anything today. As a relatively young school, our endowment is rather small. Older schools and universities benefit greatly from planned giving, which helps provide additional support to students and the school. To ensure that the school we love is strong for the next forty years, planned gifts are essential.
There are many ways you can designate a future gift. You are invited to contact the Development office to learn more about what options might work best for you. Through the years, we have learned that many families have already designated a future gift to MPA through their will. We encourage you to let us know about your planned gift to ensure we can carry out your intentions and to plan for the future of our students and teachers.
The MPA Legacy Society honors families and individuals who have made provisions for MPA in their will. Thank you to our volunteer leaders who help to spearhead the Legacy Society and planned giving at MPA: Melissa Peacock, Isaac Marshall, Clarence Knox, Jennifer Holloway. A legacy gift can be any size and will have a lasting impact on MPA students for generations to come. Planned gifts to MPA lay the foundation for a long-lasting future for us and those who will come after us.
