Research consistently demonstrates that fostering a strong sense of community within a high school setting is beneficial for students social-emotional development, academic achievement, and overall well-being. According to a study published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, “schools with robust community-building programs report a noticeable (32%) increase in student engagement and academic performance (28%).” These findings show that students in schools with strong community programs demonstrated increased empathy and more positive attitudes toward their education.
The development of meaningful relationships within the school community creates a foundation of trust that extends beyond the classroom walls. When students from different grade levels interact through structured (or unstructured) activities, mentorship programs, and shared experiences, they develop valuable social skills and meaningful connections. Recently, MPA held its annual Reading Pairing Assembly, where Upper School students were assigned to spend time and build relationships with younger students. The buzz throughout the halls of the building was infectious as students of different grade levels read each other books, played games, or worked to create Mad Lib stories. These interactions helped to break down the traditional barriers between grade levels, allowing the older students to serve as role models and show leadership while giving the younger students a sense of belonging.
At the time of writing, there is a frenetic buzz within the Upper School as last minute details are being solidified for the Black History Showcase. Upper School students of all ages are working together to decorate and to finalize the plans for this important all school event. Students are creating set lists for the music that they will play, ingredients are being ordered for the tremendous Southern and soul food that will be enjoyed, and leadership is being shown by students as they work with their teachers and classmates to bring to life curricular aspects of African American achievements.
The collaboration of students between grades 9-12 in community-building activities provides opportunities for growth and development. Younger students benefit from the guidance and experience of upperclassmen, while older students strengthen their leadership skills and responsibility through mentoring roles. This vertical integration helps create a more cohesive school environment where students feel supported through their Upper School academic journey.
Next Monday student voices will be heard as they “whoop and holler” during the first rounds of the third annual Upper School Rock, Paper, Scissors Tournament. Students will compete against peers within their own grade as they winnow down the competition from 264 participants to the champion, who will be crowned during an Upper School Monday Morning Meeting on April 1. These community experiences not only benefit individual students but also contribute to a more dynamic and inclusive school community where student voices are valued, respected, and celebrated.
See you on campus soon!
