First Day of School 2017

The hallways were filled with joyful children and their families and the classrooms were bustling with first day of school information and activities.

The Parents Association hosted a popular morning coffee, new students and families were welcomed with open arms, and revised schedules were implemented smoothly.

Faculty and staff gathered after school to recall the most special moments from the day and they were both numerous and heartwarming. Ms. Abbe shared that her new students actually laughed at her jokes!

Hello From Marguerite Devens ’15

Several of our young alums shared their summer endeavors with current families in a publication we call Welcome Home. Here is the final one in a series of three. Enjoy!

Student in front of chalkboardDear MPA,

I am a rising third year statistics major and varsity swimmer at the University of Chicago, and I am spending my summer in New York City teaching literature with Breakthrough New York. My students are low-income, high-potential kids who love to learn almost as much as I love to teach, and they are taking these classes in an attempt to be first-generation college students. Being in Tutor’s Guild at MPA and having the opportunity to learn from faculty members like Mr. Meacock prepared me to discuss books and literature in worthwhile and meaningful ways with my young students.

Go Panthers!

Hello From Cooper Olson ’16

Several of our young alums shared their summer endeavors with current families in a publication we call Welcome Home. Here is the second in a series of three. Enjoy!

Copper in front of college signHey, MPA!

I just finished my freshman year at the University of St. Thomas where I have been studying business management in the Honors Program, and playing on the Basketball Team. This
summer my teammates and I have been working hard preparing for next season. From workouts, drills, and scrimmages, to coaching the basketball camps here at UST, we’re playing and working together almost every day. On top of basketball, I’ve continued my education over the summer by taking an accounting class. I’m thankful for my experiences at MPA that taught me to push myself both in and out of the classroom.

See you soon!

MPA Junior Teaches English in Japan

Henry sitting on beach. Thank you to Henry Peterson for sharing his incredible summer adventure with the MPA community!

This summer, I spent two weeks at Okinawa Shogaku Senior High School on Okinawa Prefecture, a small Japanese island near Taiwan. Over spring break, my family traveled around Japan and I especially liked Okinawa’s combination of dense urban area and small island feel, so I decided to come back over the summer.

I stayed in a dorm for students from all over the world near the school. Interestingly, many of the international students I met attend the Minnesota Japanese School that MPA hosts on Saturdays, so there were several other Minnesotans staying with me.

Each day, the other American students and I helped native Japanese students learn English. During many of the classes, the exchange students were excused to give presentations to other sections. I talked mainly about MPA and my hometown, but I heard presentations on American colleges as well.

We also met with students from high schools in Hong Kong and Taiwan to discuss the differences in cultures, schools, and life in our countries. I practiced reading and writing the language and spent time relaxing in the dorm with other American students. It was really valuable for me to be immersed in a new culture, and traveling alone for the first time helped me become more independent.

With all of these amazing experiences, I was surprised we still managed to have some free time. Outside of school, we perused Kokusai Street, a popular tourist destination with shops and restaurants. We participated in a traditional tea ceremony, ate delicious sushi, took karate lessons (all students at the school are required to participate). My favorite memory was a trip to Okinawa’s Churuami Aquarium, one of the largest in the world. We saw an incredible dolphin show. I also went on a run through town to stay active and to get to know the area. I’m very grateful for this unique opportunity to observe and participate in a school with other students my age from all over the world.

Hello From Sophie Netteberg ’16

Several of our young alums shared their summer endeavors with current families in a publication we call Welcome Home. Here is the first in a series of three. Enjoy!

Hi, MPA!

I’m enjoying my summer in Minnesota after finishing my first year at Williams College, where I played in the Berkshire Symphony, joined the Ultimate Frisbee Team, and was a board member for the Effective Altruism Club. This June, I started as the Audience Insight Analyst/Marketing Intern at the Minneapolis Institute of Art. In this position, I am gaining experience for my proposed statistics degree and working for a fantastic institution filled with brilliant people.

I’m so thankful MPA helped me realize I can mesh my many personal and professional passions into the experiences I want in my adult life.

Cheers,
Sofie Netteberg

MPA Robot Invades the 3M Plaza

The MPArors, MPA’s robotics team, joined 20 other teams in an event called “Robots Invade the Plaza,” hosted by 3M on August 4. The event was a celebration of robotics by many of the teams that benefit from 3M’s support.

3M invited employees and their children to attend. Robotics team members demonstrated their robots to these onlookers, answered questions about the robots and about FIRST Robotics Competition, and many children experienced the thrill of driving a robot themselves. After the demonstration time, each team had a picture taken with Dean Kamen, the highly respected founder of FIRST Robotics.

Teams lined up for a “robot parade” for the employees. As each team walked by with their robot, an announcer read a brief description of the team. This was followed by a pizza and salad lunch, and an inspiring talk by Kamen.

It was a fun day to celebrate robots, and 3M’s support of MPA’s team!

Class of 2017: Charles Sardi, North Oaks

Chad Senior PhotoIn what grade did you come to MPA? 2nd

How did you come to choose the college that you did?
The University of Notre Dame had been my dream school since before I can remember. My grandfather attended the university and, partially as a result, is living out a long and fulfilled life. His son, my father, was the one who really got me into Notre Dame football and the spirit of the university as a child. After my freshman year at MPA, I made the decision to attend a two-week summer program for architecture at the University of Notre Dame and absolutely loved it. Ever since then, I have been anticipating my return.

What are you most excited about as you embark on your college experience?
What I most look forward to in the next few years of my life is the adventure. I have always anticipated branching out after graduation, which made the college hunt all the more exciting for me. One thing that has always interested me is the study of architecture. So personally, this makes studying architecture at the University of Notre Dame a thrilling opportunity. This in combination with Notre Dame football and basketball games have me very excited to say the least. Read More
