Head’s Message: Coming Together

by Dr. Bill Hudson, Head of School

This weekend, I had the pleasure of attending our school’s production of Pippin. I am impressed on so many levels with the accomplishments of our students. The singing was phenomenal, the music was beautiful, and the acting and staging was excellent. I was also struck by the diversity of the cast and crew. Students from across all three grade levels, peer groups, and interests were represented. It was an “MPA Moment” that captured the mission of our school.

A Salute to Service: Joe Kordosky

A portion of this article is being shared with permission from the Minnesota State High School League.

by Tim Leighton, MSHSL Communications Coordinator

They chose career paths filled with long hours, countless duties, and too often, thankless times that would make most throw their hands up in disgust or surrender. Daily, they are seemingly pulled in dozens of directions at once, but somehow, they stay on course with a caring sense of direction for their clientele, affirmative smiles, and the deep-rooted purpose of making a positive impact with students.

Welcome to the oftentimes wacky way of life for an activities director. It is a welcomed existence for most. Truly.

“I am very fortunate to be in a profession that is so near and dear to my heart,” Mounds Park Academy activities director Joe Kordosky said during a mid-winter visit.

BusPress Release

April 24, 2017 – Mounds Park Academy (MPA) is thrilled to announce the expansion of bus services to neighborhoods in Stillwater and Woodbury! This expansion is the result of market demand as well the school’s desire to serve current and future families better. The cost per rider has been reduced by 34 percent and the time on the bus has been as well. These two new routes are in addition to previously established routes serving Saint Paul and North Oaks/Shoreview/Roseville communities.

MPA is a private, PreK–12 college preparatory school located on the border of Maplewood and Saint Paul, near the intersection of McKnight Road and Larpenteur Avenue. It attracts students to its 32 acre campus from across the Twin Cities metro for its rigorous yet joyful approach to education, but particularly from the east metro. Nearly 20 percent of MPA’s current students come from the Stillwater area and nearly 15 percent from the Woodbury area.

Known for its exceptional faculty, small class sizes, character education, and engaging curriculum, MPA fosters remarkable students who forever dream big and do right. Kindergarten Service-Learning Project

Kindergarten StudentsOur kindergarten students were at Kowalski’s Markets in Stillwater on Saturday, engaged in a service-learning project. Lessons in math, social studies, English, and more prepared them, and they used the money they earned to shop for the North Saint Paul Food Shelf. Many thanks to Kowalski’s for their longtime support of this wonderful project, and to the students for their hard work to help stock the Food Shelf for those in need! Click here see more photos of this project.

Cross-Age Environmental Science Project

environmental studies studentsThis week, fourth grade students joined seniors in Ms. Sullivan’s class to learn about pollinators and the role they play in our environment. The Maplewood Nature Center held a pollinator in-service for seniors last week, who in turn passed this knowledge on to the younger students with a short presentation followed by several educational, hands-on stations. This was a great example of how beneficial cross-age relationships are how much our students enjoy interacting with each other PreK-12.

Head’s Message: “13 Reasons Why” Discussion Resources

by Dr. Bill Hudson, Head of School

The death of a child, under any circumstance, is tragic. As a parent and educator, my greatest fear has always been suicide. I’d like to make you aware of a recently released Netflix series called 13 Reasons Why. The series has prompted significant controversy and concern among parents, educators, and mental health professionals.

The show depicts a central character who dies by suicide, leaving behind 13 tapes for different people in her life whose actions (or lack of actions) affected her negatively. Mental health professionals have expressed concerns that the show, which has been dubbed the “latest teenage Netflix binge craze,” fails to make any mention of the underlying mental illness that is present for the vast majority of young people struggling with suicidal ideation and instead may lead young people to believe that other people’s actions are mainly to blame for a suicide.  Read More
