Alumni Choir Reunion is a Hit

Alumni_Choir_Reunion.jpgCelebrating 30 years of singing, the MPA Alumni Choir Reunion was held on Saturday, November 24. The Alumni Choir consisted of more than 50 alumni, faculty, and friends reuniting in song.  It was a spirited day that began with a reception, choir rehearsal, dinner, and an evening concert.  Performances included current MPA Chamber, Jazz, and Concert Choirs along with an MPA Women’s Quintet from the 90’s, and solo performances by alumni Jack Cotterell and Kelly Turpin (class of 2004).  The Alumni Choir sang expressively on their set of music while the evening concluded with current MPA Choirs and the Alumni Choir singing  together on  “You are the New Day” and the gospel chorus, “The Storm is Passing Over”.  Reflecting on the event, US Choir Director, John Habermann said, “Let’s not wait another thirty years to do this!”

Robotics Team Seeks Adult Mentors

The FIRST Robotics Competition 2013 season is right around the corner, and the MPArors are getting ready for another six weeks of building robots. Team advisor Mrs. Koen is seeking mentors to work with MPA’s robotics team as they tackle their second year in the FIRST Competition. Last year, MPA’s enthusiastic and hard-working team won the “Rookie Inspiration Award” at the regional competition.

If you or anyone you know may be interested, please invite them to Pre-Season Mentor Round Table Meeting scheduled for December 10th from 6:00 p.m.-7:30 p.m at MPA in Room 15. This program is a success because of the guidance the team receives from mentors. This is a great way to make a difference in the lives of students. Share your expertise in engineering, design, programming, marketing, electronics, or other areas. The time commitment for mentors can range from one evening per week or more depending on your availability. The build season is January through February, and the competition will be March 28-30.

The meeting will serve as an opportunity to meet the team members, review the mission of FIRST, discuss mentor roles and responsibilities, tour the facilities,  and look at the robotics timeline for the season.

Please RSVP to Nicole Koen for the December 10th meeting. A light dinner and refreshments will be served. If you are bringing a guest (or two), include him/her in your RSVP. The meeting will take place at MPA in Room 15.

And today’s faculty? Ms. Shardlow.  Marilyn Shardlow taught in the very first year of Mounds Park Academy.  She came from Breck School with a number of the founding faculty and Mr. Kreischer to create the kind of school they dreamed about – an experience driven education designed to help students achieve while balancing academics, arts, and athletics. At one time or another, she has taught every grade from sixth grade through seniors, and when questioned will admit that she helped to write the school song many years ago!  One of the favorite parts of her job is the Inkslingers  writing club she has advised since its inception  in 2003.

We asked Ms. Shardlow what she thought was fabulous about MPA.  As an English teacher, she gave us an eloquent reply:  “The deep sense of connection I see wherever I look. Teachers, students, parents, alumni, administrators, staff members — they all come together in numerous complex ways to create one giant web of caring, concern, trust and energy. I love coming to work here because I can see myself in this web of interconnection and it’s HOME.”

MPA 10th Grader Attends National Girl Up Teen Advisor Meeting

Below is a blog written by MPA 10th grader Munira Khalif, who recently attended a national Girl Up Teen Advisor meeting in New York to learn more about gener equality and universal education. Munira’s blog was published on Oct. 18 on the Girl Up website.

Girl Up State of Mind
by Munira Khalif

Munira_1.jpg

In our first in-person 2012-2013 Teen Advisor meeting in New York, I had the opportunity to meet 15 wonderful Teen Advisors, be inspired by riveting speakers, and reinvigorate my desire to create global equality for my counterparts.

I visited the renowned United Nations headquarters, and learned about its history and goals. During the visit, I was delighted to see Girl Up’s mission reflected in the Millennium Development Goals. Gender equality and universal education are two goals that Girl Up strives to implement and sustain. Hopefully, we can see these goals become reality in 2015!

Aside from my visit to the UN Headquarters, I was able to participate in the Girls Night Out reception, where Girl Up Champion Monique Coleman galvanized the crowd.  She spoke of her transition from High School Musicalstar to UN Youth Champion and founder of Gimme Mo.  Monique demonstrated that the desire for social good will be rewarded with both opportunity and remarkable results. She encouraged  youth to become involved as advocates for global change.

In addition, I was able to gain knowledge and insight from two astonishing women, Gillian Sorensen and Jennifer Catino.  Gillian Sorensen, senior advisor at the United Nations Foundation, revealed how she paved her career. She established the necessity of diligence and hard work and is a role model for young women everywhere. Jennifer Catino, an associate with Population Council’s Poverty, Gender, and Youth program, shared the importance of girl empowerment in developing countries. She demonstrated that adolescent girls continue to face issues, but with help, these girls easily can become essential contributors to society.

Most importantly, over the weekend, I was able to enhance my overall understanding of the campaign. The Girl Up staff revealed the pivotal role that media, advocacy, fundraising, and social media play in the campaign.

I was truly delighted to spend a weekend surrounded by active girls that sought to ensure their counterparts had the right to be educated, healthy, safe, and positioned to be leaders in their communities. These Teen Advisors represent the movement and search for global equality and change.

I left the meeting in a Girl Up state of mind, determined that we can spread this change together.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”-Margaret Mead
