Panthers Recap: MSHSL Class A State Championship

Yahya Madar celebrates after winning the state high jumpWith 13 athletes plus relay alternates qualifying for the state meet, it was a busy weekend for panthers track and field. On Thursday, MPA’s state qualifiers, alternates and coaches took a bus to Hamline University for the season’s final practice on the track at Hamline. After practice, the team enjoyed a stop at Jamba Juice on the way home!

On Friday, the boys 4x200m of seniors Tae’Vion Wilkins, Ian Olson and Flynn Opatz and junior Nathan Harvanko led off the state meet competition in the prelims of the 4x200m. Though they did not make finals, placing 14th with a time of 1:34.46, seniors Tae’Vion Wilkins, Ian Olson and Flynn Opatz got to conclude their track and field careers on the track at the state meet. Panthers Recap: Section 4A Championships

Sofia Walker in the Section 4A raceMPA Track and Field went toe to toe with the best competition in Section 4A and emerged with a record number of runners advancing to the state meet!

On the girls side, highlights include eighth grader Zoe M. winning her prelim heat in the 100m, advancing through her semifinals heat, and qualifying for finals, placing fourth with a season best time of 13.17. In the 400m, 8th grader Greta M. (Gentry) advanced to finals and placed fifth, running a near season best of 1:02.81. In the 800m, senior Sofia Walker’s dream of qualifying for the state meet came to fruition, as she won the 800m in 2:26.43, just off her personal best. Sophomore Izzy Quam ran near her season best to make finals in the 800m and finished seventh in 2:34.94. In the 1600m, Sophomore Katie Dahiya earned a medal with her sixth-place finish, running her second-best time of the season in 5:49.26. She added another medal in the 3200m, running 12:26.80 and finishing fifth with a personal best by nearly 30 seconds! She is now fifth all time in MPA history in the 3200m.  In the 100m hurdles, 8th grader Emily B. qualified for the finals running a personal best time of 18.56 in the prelims (now eighth best all time at MPA) and took eighth in the finals.

In the 4x100m, the team of eighth grader Zoe M., ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, junior Catherine Moore and senior Ellie Quam made the finals and placed seventh, running 53.34. They are now sixth all time at MPA. In the 4x200m, the team of eighth graders Zoe M. and Greta M., ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, and junior Catherine Moore. ran 1:52.22 to earn medals with their fifth-place finish.  Their time is now eighth all time at MPA. In the girls 4x800m, the team of seniors Sofia Walker and Gabby Law, tenth grader Izzy Quam and 8th grader Margo N. ran a heroic race to finish second and qualify for state! Panthers Excel At State Track & Field

Congratulations to all of the Panthers who participated in the State Track & Field Meet, held June 7-8. These seven athletes all earned All-State Honors and were medalists by placing in the top nine in Minnesota, Class A:

  • Isak Nightingale, Cullen Moore, Henry Snider, Matthew Bourne – Ninth in Boys 4 x 800m Relay, 8:20.17
  • Henry Snider – Seventh in the 3200m Run, 9:53.34
  • Sofia  Walker – Fifth in the 800m Run, 2:18.40 with a new school record!
  • Yahya Madar – First in the High Jump, 6’ 10 with a new school record and tied the MN Class A State Record! Only 18 high school students have jumped this high in the United States this year.

Others qualifying for the State Meet, competing, but not placing in the top nine include:

  • Katie Dahiya, Gabby Law, Margo N., Izzy Quam – 17th in the 4 x 800m Relay
  • Tae’Vion Wilkins, Ian Olson, Nathan Harvanko, Flynn Opatz – 14th in the 4 x 200m Relay

Mounds Park Academy is so proud of all its student-athletes headed to state!

This weekend, MPA made school history with the most Track & Field State Qualifiers ever!

The State Track & Field Meet will be June 7 and 8 at Hamline University.

State Tennis starts Tuesday, June 4 at Reed Sweatt Tennis Club. MPA takes on Hibbing High School at 12 PM.

In MPA Golf, Maya Merchant advances to State June 11 and 12 at Pebble Creek.

MPA Achievements At The Section 4A True Team Meet

Yahya Madar at a track meetMPA Track and Field traveled to Howard Lake-Waverly-Winstead High School for the Section 4A True Team Meet, and ran, jumped and threw to excellent performances. In a typical meet, only the top eight individuals and top six relays score, but in a True Team meet, every competitor scores. There are 14 teams in Section 4A, and with each team able to put up to two athletes in an event, many individual events included 28 athletes.

On the girls side, eighth grader Zoe M. won the 100m dash in a personal best time of 13.26 and placed second in the 200m in 27.42, which is the seventh fastest time ever at MPA! Eighth grader Greta M. (Gentry Academy) placed fifth in the 200m in 28.04 and won the 400m in a personal best time of 1:02.44, making the MSHSL honor roll and moving up to third place all time at MPA with the fastest 400m since 2007! In the girls 800m, senior Sofia Walker won with a personal best time of 2:26.04, the third fastest time ever at MPA and fastest 800m since 2002! Notable performances in the field events include senior Gabby Law placing sixth in the triple jump with a season best performance of 30’11.

In the 4x100m relay, the team of junior Catherine Moore, ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, and eighth graders Zoe M., and Greta M. (Gentry Academy) placed won with a time of 53.04, tied for fourth best all time at MPA! The 4x200m team of eighth grader Alexa H. (Gentry Academy), ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, eighth grader Emily B. and junior Catherine Moore placed third in 2:00.44. In the 4x800m, senior Sofia Walker eighth Margo N., senior Gabby Law and sophomore Izzy Quam placed third in a season best of 10:27.09, seventh best all time at MPA!

On the boys side, senior Tae’Vion Wilkins placed third in both the 100m dash (11.96) and the 200m dash (24.11). MPA placed two runners in the top six of the boys 400m with senior Flynn Opatz running a season best 54.43 for fourth place and Nathan Harvanko running 56.55 for sixth. In the 800m, senior Matt Bourne was fifth in a personal best of 2:07.93. Junior Henry Snider was a double winner, taking the 1600m in 4:41.03 and the 3200m in a personal best of 9:53.70. He became the fourth panther ever to break 10 minutes in the 3200m. In the 300m hurdles, senior Dylan Dickinson ran a personal best 46.76 to move up to sixth place all time at MPA, and the fastest 300m hurdles time since 2008. In the high jump, senior Yahya Madar won with a personal best of 6’7, extending his school record.  6’7 is one of the best jumps in Minnesota so far this year. In the triple jump, senior Tae’Vion Wilkins jumped a personal best of 38’11.75 to place fifth and move up to fourth all time at MPA. Also in the triple jump, senior Dylan Dickinson jumped 36’9.5 to record a personal best of nearly two feet and move up to tenth place all time at MPA.

In the boys 4x100m relay, the team of seniors Tae’Vion Wilkins, Ian Olson, junior Shane Fruchterman and sophomore Caleb Rhodes ran 46.82 to place second in a season best and move up to fifth all time at MPA.  In the boys 4x200m relay, seniors Flynn Opatz and Ian Olson and juniors Shane Fruchterman and Nathan Harvanko, placed fourth in season best 1:38.32.  In the 4x400m, seniors Matthew Bourne and Henry Peterson, junior Nathan Harvanko and freshman Cullen Moore ran a season best 3:44.79 to place fifth. In the 4x800m seniors Matthew Bourne and Henry Peterson and freshmen Cullen Moore and Isak Nightingale ran a season best 8:34.78 to place third and earn a spot on the state honor roll. Their time is fifth best all time at MPA.

In a true testament to the strength of the panthers’ teams, the girls placed fifth of fourteen teams with 595.5 points and the boys placed fourth of fourteen with 610 points. The next meet is the IMAC Championship on Thursday, May 16 at Providence Academy.


Panthers Take Third And Fourth In St. Croix Lutheran Invitational

the MPA track and field teamIn a great tune up meet before the Section 4A Championships, MPA Track and Field traveled to the St. Croix Lutheran Invitational in West St. Paul. Notable performances on the girls side include senior Sofia Walker placing second in the 400m in a personal best of 1:02.59. Her time is fourth all time in MPA history! Senior Gabby Law came in sixth in the 400m, running a personal best of 1:07.49. In the 800m, sophomore Katie Dahiya placed second with a personal best time of 2:43.47.  In the 1600m, junior Izzy George ran a personal best of 6:56.61, breaking seven minutes for the first time thanks to a dramatic kick over the last 100m! In the 100m hurdles, eighth grader Emily B. ran a personal best of 18.91 to place fourth, earning the tenth spot on the MPA top ten in that event.

In the girls triple jump, senior Gabby Law tied her season best of 30.11 to place third. Eighth grader Zoe M. added a third place finish in the long jump, recording a 14.8. In the shot put, ninth grader Rose Thompson-Nelson placed eighth with a personal best of 26.4, good for tenth place all time at MPA. In the discus, junior Catherine Moore placed third with a personal best throw of 93.7, good for seventh best all time at MPA. Read More


Panthers Take Third And Fifth At IMAC Championships

girls relay team at IMAC ChampionshipsThe Panthers traveled to Providence Academy on a warm Thursday afternoon for the IMAC championships. Noteworthy performances on the girls side include eighth grader Zoe M. placing fourth in the 100m dash in 13.39 and adding a fifth place finish in the 200m in 28.02. Eighth grader Greta M. (Gentry Academy) finished fifth in the 200m in 28.10 and fourth in the 400m in a personal best 1:02.28. In the 800m, senior Sofia Walker ran a near personal best 2:26.18 to place second and sophomore Izzy Quam ran a season best 2:33.63 to finish sixth. Eighth grader Emily B. ran two personal bests in the hurdles races, placing sixth in 19.13 in the 100m hurdles and recording another personal best of 55.12 in the 300 hurdles. In the field events, Zoe M. placed fifth in the long jump with a personal best jump of 15.8.75, now third all time in MPA history. 15.8.75 gets Zoe on the state honor roll in the long jump! Junior Catherine Moore placed fourth in the discus throw with a near personal best of 80.9.

In the 4x100m, junior Catherine Moore, ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, and eighth graders Greta M. (Gentry) and Zoe M. place second in a season best time of 53.00, moving up to sole possession of fourth place all time at MPA. In the 4x800m, seniors Gabby Law and Sofia Walker, sophomore Izzy Quam and eighth grader Margo N. were conference champions! They ran a season best 10:21.54, earning a spot on the state honor roll and moving up to fifth place all time at MPA with the fastest time since 2002. Read More


Middle School Track And Field Wins Conference Championship

middle school track and field competing at championshipCongratulations to the Middle School Boys and Girls Track And Field Teams! These Panthers won the Conference Championship last week!

The Middle School Conference Championship Meet was held at Providence Academy and totaled in 29 team and individual events. The Panthers placed first in 11 of them.

In the boys 100 meter hurdles event, Owen L. came in first place and Kai Z. in fifth. Amelia J. placed second for the girls and Kensi B. fourth.

MPA took third in both the boys and girls 800 meter relay.

Hope B. placed first in the girls 1600 meter run. For the boys, all top three places were MPA runners–Jasper P., Owen L., and Evan W.

In the 400 meter relay, the MPA girls team took second place. The boys took both second and third in their race. Read More


IMAC Conference Relay Results

Track and Field team membersMPA Track and Field traveled to Blake for the IMAC relays on Thursday and had a number of terrific performances. Notable results for the girls team include 10th grader Katie Dahiya placing third in the 1600m run with a new personal best time of 5:39.78, now eighth best all time at MPA. In the 1600m medley relay, the team of seniors Gabby Law and Sofia Walker, junior Catherine Moore and eighth grader Greta M. (Gentry Academy) placed third with a time of 4:42.20, now ninth place all time at MPA. In the 4x100m relay, the team of junior Catherine Moore, ninth grader Ella Fruchterman, and eighth graders Zoe M., and Greta M. (Gentry Academy) placed third with a time of 53.64, now seventh of all time at MPA.

In the high jump relay, seniors Sofia Walker (4’4) and Gabby Law (4’4), and junior Zoe Hutton (4’0) combined for a total of 12’8, good for third place and are now third all-time at MPA. Sofia and Gabby’s jumps of 4’4 move them into a tie for eighth place on the high jump top 10 performances list. In the long jump, eighth grader Greta M. (Gentry Academy) placed sixth with a personal best jump of 15’1 ½, good for seventh all time at MPA.

In the shot put relay, the team of sophomore Izzy Quam and ninth graders Olivia Lantz and Rose Thompson-Nelson totaled 67’ 0 ½, now eighth on the top 10 list all time. In the discus relay, the team of junior Catherine Moore and ninth graders Olivia Lantz and Rose Thompson-Nelson totaled 173′ 11, led by Catherine’s fourth place throw of 81’1, and are now eighth on the top 10 all-time list. The girls team finished in fifth place with 57.5 points.

MPA Triangular Track and Field Meet Results

Taevion at a track and field meetMPA Track and Field hosted SPA and Minnehaha at the Schilling Track on a partly sunny, cool afternoon. On the girls’ side, notable performances included eighth grader Zoe M. winning the 100m dash in 13.2 (all times are hand timed). Eighth grader Greta M. finished third in the 100m in 13.7. In the 200m, that same eighth grade duo finished in first and fourth, with Zoe winning in 27.8 (10th all time at MPA) and Greta fourth in 29.2. In the 400m, 12th grader Sofia Walker finished second in 1:05.8, in the 800m, sophomore Izzy Quam finished second in 2:35.3, and in the 1600m, Katie Dahiya finished second in 5:49.0. In the 100m hurdles, Senior Ellie Quam won in 18.3 seconds, and in the 300m hurdles, Ellie was second in 53.2 and eighth grader Emily B. was tied for fourth in 55.5. Read More
